Meet Jody

Jody Symula is an artist living and working in Richmond Virginia. She produces work across a variety of mediums including painting, printmaking and functional ceramics. At the root of her practice is the contemplation and exploration of relationships; personal, psychological and energetic, which play out through shapes and marks on the surfaces of her work. Her visual vocabulary consists of a series of shapes and marks that are actors on a two dimensional stage repelling, touching, and engaging with each other. She is more interested in the similarities of media than their differences and enjoys creating bridges between ways of working and communicating.

Jody is originally trained in the culinary arts, before working as a pastry chef in New Hampshire and California. She earned her undergraduate degree from Humboldt State University in northern California (now California Polytechnic) and an MFA from VCUarts in 2006 where she works as the Assistant Dean for Student Affairs.
